Frequently Asked Questions
What materials are commonly used to make smoking pipes?
The most common materials of pipes, from traditional to modern, usually consist of birch, briar, corn cob, maple, rosewood, acrylic, vulcanite bits, lucite, and metal.
How do smoking pipes differ in terms of design and functionality
- - Acorn – The Acorn pipe is a bit of Dublin and Apple shape. The Acorn pipe features a bowl that swells outward toward the rim and tapers dramatically inward as it approaches the heel.
- - Author or Prince – The Author's pipe shape is essentially a Prince with a larger, beefier bowl. It also features a stouter, a round shank, and a slightly bent and tapered stem.
- - Ball – Ball pipes are named due to the nearly perfectly spherical bowl with a well-rounded shape that fits easily in hand but is notoriously difficult to carve.
- - Belge – This is a dramatically forward-angled pope in the style of traditional clay. The Belge shape has a wider, oval shank and a narrower, almost egg-shaped bowl.
- - Billiard – The most recognizable pipe shape, the Billiard has a cylindrical bowl with slightly convex flanks and a round shank roughly as long as the bowl is high.
- - Bulldog – Another classic shape, the Bulldog has a bowl that tapers up toward the rim and down toward the heel. It is usually paired with a paneled, diamond shank and often features traditional one or two tiny grooves called beadlines, cut around the bowls' middle.
These are just a few of the many different designs. Each pipe functions perfectly, with the main difference being within the pipe's size itself. A long pipe and a short pipe come down to the warmth of the smoke. Shorter pipes smoke tends to be warmer, and we generally do not recommend short pipes for beginners.
Are there specific techniques for packing a smoking pipe for the best smoking experience?
Surprisingly, there are many different techniques and tutorials on how to pack a pipe; as with smoking, many of us have personal rituals or techniques tailored to our experience. Here are a few of our favorites to try:
- - Frank Method – The Frank Method, developed by Achim Frank for use in pipe smoking competitions, involves compacting the tobacco from the sides without tamping or packing the top. This leads to a firm layer of tobacco at the top of the pipe bowl with a looser layer beneath, without over-compressing the top and making it difficult to draw. This firm top layer and looser bottom produce a longer burn with fewer re-lights, which is also perfect for everyday smoking.
- - Another technique is picking up pipe tobacco in very small pinches, rolling it without compressing it between fingers, and dropping it into the bowl. Once the bowl is full, you can gently press down either using a pipe tamper or fingers, but do it slowly and lightly to avoid packing too tightly, which causes difficulty drawing from the pipe and causes it to go out frequently.
